Pitts, Bell Grab B1G Weekly Honors

MINNEAPOLIS – Helping Minnesota to a 2-0 week, freshman Destiny Pitts and junior Kenisha Bell were recognized by the Big Ten Conference Monday for their performances.

Pitts was named Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this year, while Bell earned Honor Roll recognition for the fourth time.

Pitts averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last week. After scoring 16 points in the previous three games combined, Pitts finished with 18 points, including 16 in the first half, in a 78-74 win at Purdue. Thirteen of her 16 first-half points came in the first quarter alone as she made 4-of-5 shots from the floor and all four free throw attempts.

In Sunday's 101-68 win over Penn State, the Detroit, Mich., native recorded 17 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals.

With her six honors this year, Pitts moves into second place in Minnesota history behind only Amanda Zahui B., who had seven in 2013-14. Pitts is one of seven players in conference history to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week at least six times. She was also recognized on Nov. 20, Nov. 27, Dec. 18, Jan. 2 and Jan. 8.

Bell averaged 18.5 points, 9.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game over the course of the week.

In the win at Purdue, she played all 40 minutes and led all scorers with 22 points, adding nine assists and five rebounds. She also tied a season high with five steals. It was her team-leading 16th game this year with at least 20 points.

Bell also posted her team-leading sixth double-double of the season in Minnesota's win over Penn State Sunday. She recorded 15 points and tied a season high with 10 assists, nine of which came in the first half.

Bell was also named to the league’s Honor Roll on Dec. 18, Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Twice she has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, earning those honors on Nov. 20 and Jan. 22.

The Golden Gophers return to the court on Feb. 14 at they host Michigan at Williams Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
