Dec. 22, 2013
I thought this was a great win for us today. We bounced back after a loss that we let slip out of our hands and I'm proud of our players. I thought we switched up defenses really well and we responded well to that. We took them out of their offensive set a few times. I don't think we played great but we played well enough. It was a great team effort by everyone.
On three point shooting influencing the offense...
I thought we moved the ball really well. When a team is in a 1-2-2 zone you have to reverse the ball and try to get some scores on the backside of the defense. I thought we did a great job of doing just that, Sari did a great job of making her shots. She had some really great looks and Rachel shot the ball really well like she usually does. I thought everybody stepped up and made shots. Almost everyone scored and that little bit of contribution from everyone makes things so much easier for Amanda and Rachel.
On the tough effort during the game...
I'm proud of our toughness today, I think we worked really hard. I don't think we played great but we out-worked Auburn. I think we did a decent job on the boards. I was concerned about rebounding coming into the game but I thought we did a good job. I was happy with how hard we worked and the effort we put in.
On being ready for the full court press...
It may not have looked like we were ready for it at times, but it's hard to simulate the kind of players that Auburn has during practice. I knew it would take us a little bit to get used to it during the game. Shayne had some trouble, and Rachel could have been a bit more aggressive against the press but I thought for the most part we did a decent job. We had some problems at the beginning and end of the game.
On how this game prepares team for Big Ten...
I think it gives our team confidence to play a team like Auburn today. They're a really good team, they beat UCLA and I think we can take this and learn from it as we go into conference play. There were a lot of things that we did out here defensively that we haven't done all year and we can take that into the Big Ten. Our full court pressure and our trapping need to get better but that was the most we used it so far this season.
On her interior play...
I think I did a good job; I could have worked to get more open in the first half and help Rachel out as the release pass. I have to catch the ball better and keep working on my play in practice.
On being successful posting up...
They ran a couple of sets for me. I started working earlier and earlier than I have previously, so I kept working on that.
On her long pass to Zahui...
Amanda was running the floor well. I saw that they were trying to get set into their defense and they weren't quite ready so I threw it up to her and I knew she could finish it so we executed that much better this game.
On Sari's shooting helping the team today...
At the end of last game coach said we needed a third scorer and Sari stepped up. She's a great three point shooter and she didn't hesitate which her allowed her to play confidently and score those points when we really needed it. She made things more difficult on Auburn because they either had to guard me or Amanda which allowed Sari to get open and eventually it was tough for them to figure out who to stop.
On her role on the team as a leader...
I definitely feel like leader as a captain and on the court I know I need to step up and make plays. One of my roles is to be a scorer and to make other players better. I need to get other people the ball which is something I continue to work on.
