Beyond U Presents "From the Locker Room to the Board Room"
University of Minnesota student-athletes attended the first Beyond U event of the 2013-14 academic year on Monday, November 11th. Beyond U is a series of programs designed to prepare student-athletes, specifically upperclassmen, for life after college athletics.
Former student-athletes Mike Linnemann (Men's Track and Field) and Rachel McKessock (Women's Track and Cross Country) have been instrumental in the building of Beyond U, serving as key speakers for the original pilot program with the Rowing team in May 2013.
Nic Romero and Mike Becker of Mutual of Omaha presented to a group of 35 student-athletes, representing 12 sports, at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex on Monday evening. "From the Locker Room to the Board Room" focuses on the importance of time management, relatable skill development through intercollegiate athletics, and networking while preparing for post-college careers.
"Beyond U was very beneficial because it helped me prepare for informational interviews and answering questions that I had from previous experiences," said Christie Clarke of Women's Swimming and Diving.
One component of the workshop included a student-athlete activity in which they used transferrable skills to compose a 30-second self-commercial.
"The power of a story stuck with me," said Alex Cisneros of Men's Swimming and Diving. "They described the impression that can be left from a vivid story. You can leave someone with a painted picture and they are much more likely to remember you."
Furthermore, the student-athletes received tips on creating vivid storytelling through dynamic first impressions and responsible interviewing while elaborating on transferrable skills from their respective athletic careers.
Student-Athlete Development will be hosting three Beyond U workshops next spring.
