Gophers Prepare For Unlimited Dance Marathon
Nov. 7, 2013
University of Minnesota student-athletes are hosting the Unlimited Dance Marathon for the first time this year. The 12-hour dance marathon at Mariucci Arena on February 22-23. The event is designed to raise funds and awareness for Amplatz Children's Hospital.
Unlimited Dance Marathon is a year-long fundraising and awareness campaign for the fight against pediatric health issues. In addition to the no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon, the event will feature personal stories from children and families served through the resources Amplatz provides. Participants dancing in the marathon will earn pledges for their dance time. Similar to Penn State's THON event, this is the fourth year of the marathon held on the University of Minnesota campus and the first year with involvement from the Gopher student-athlete population.
The annual event aims to unite the campus and the entire student-body to impact the lives of patients. The funds obtained through Unlimited Dance Marathon will help build an indoor playground. Along with providing a break from hospital rooms, the playground also assists in recovery and rehabilitation efforts. In order to begin the building process, a pledge of $75,000 is needed.
Prior to the event in February, student-athletes will volunteer at various Gopher athletic events to raise monetary donations. The next opportunity to donate will be at the Gopher Football home games against Penn State Saturday and Wisconsin on November 23. Student-athletes will walk within the Gopher tailgate lots, asking for monetary donations, all of which go directly to this cause.
