AssociaThe United States Cross Country Coaches Association named head cross country coach Steve Plasencia the Midwest Region Cross Country Coach of the Year by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.

Under Plasencia, the Golden Gophers won the NCAA District V title and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 at Indiana University. The Golden Gophers placed 3rd at the 1999 Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30 at Penn State. It was Minnesota's highest finish since 1989.
