The University of Minnesota men's cross country program continues the 2017 campaign on Friday, Nov. 10 with the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional in Ames, Iowa. The men's 10-kilometer competition is set for 11:45 a.m. CT at the ISU Cross Country Course.
The top two teams from each of nine regional meets automatically advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, Nov. 18. Teams receiving at-large bids will fill the remaining 13 spots at the national meet following the conclusion of the nine regional meets. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships.
Obsa Ali Earns Second All-Big Ten Honor
Obsa Ali led the Maroon & Gold with an eighth-place finish at the 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships last month in Indiana -- the senior's best finish at the conference meet. Ali ran a 24:19.7 for the eight-kilometer race, followed by Alec Basten (26th), Connor Olson (29th), Hamza Ali (34th), and Evan Ferlic (46th) as the Gophers finished sixth with 142 points. Ali, who earned his second career Second Team All-Big Ten honor at the meet, is also one of two Gophers who have earned NCAA All-Region honors twice in their careers along with Charlie Lawrence.
'U' Breaks Ground on T&F Facility
The University of Minnesota officially broke ground on a new outdoor track & field venue on Friday, Oct. 20. The new stadium will feature a nine-lane track with three chutes, full field event hosting capabilities, and a design to allow sprints and certain field events to be held in multiple directions to take advantage of wind conditions on competition days. These features, along with permanent and event-based seating, provide the flexibility and the amenities to host a wide variety of meets.
Lucas Leads Pack at Fall Finale
True freshman Hunter Lucas ran a 25:53 to win the eight-kilometer Fall Finale last Friday in Collegeville, Minn. Minnesota has now won 11-straight Fall Finale individual titles dating back to 2006. Lucas is redshirting the 2017 cross country season.
Rewind: 2016 NCAA Midwest Regional
The Gophers return all five scorers from last year's Midwest Regional squad as the Maroon & Gold finished seventh with a total of 205 points. Obsa Ali and Charlie Lawrence repeated as NCAA All-Region honorees, finishing 14th and 18th, respectively. Connor Olson (29th), Joey Duerr (61st) and Derek Wiebke (83rd) are also back on roster after scoring last year as is Evan Ferlic (119th) who ran last year but did not factor into the team's scoring.
Ali Breaks School 10K Record at NCAA Regional

Ali finished the 10-kilometer race at the ISU Cross Country Course in 29:23.06, besting Plasencia's 29:26.0 from the 1976 NCAA Championships.
