Gophers Set for Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country team returns to action this Sunday at the 2013 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The Boilermaker Cross Country Course will host this year's conference championship with the men's race scheduled for 9:45 a.m. CT.
Last Time Out
The Gophers tallied 629 team points to finish 29th at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational two weeks ago at Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course behind Derek Storkel’s pacing. The senior led a small pack of Gophers with a 95th-place finish (24:20), one second ahead of Andrew Larsen in 97th (24:21).
Marcus Paulson crossed the finish line in 24:31 to finish in 127th while Adam Zutz came in 138th with a time of 24:34. Alex Brend came in 172nd with a time of 24:49 to close out Minnesota’s scoring.
Other Gopher finishers included Riley Macon (211th in team standings, 229th overall, 25:19), Steve Sulkin (224th in team standings, 247th overall, 25:32), John Simons (257th overall, 25:41) and Blayne Dulian (278th overall, 26:23).
Northern Arizona earned the team title with 121 points while Kemoy Campbell of Arkansas finished first individually at 23:10.
Minnesota also had several runners compete in the event’s open race with Christian Skaret setting the tone in 15th (24:59). Bob Nicolls finished 18th with a time of 25:04 whileAaron Bartnik edged teammate Cole O’Brien for 30th and 31st, respectively. Bartnik came in at 25:21 while O’Brien crossed the line in 25:29.
About the 2013 Big Ten Championships
Purdue University will host the 2013 Big Ten Men's & Women's Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Boilermaker Cross Country Course. It is the first time since 2002 that the Boilermakers have hosted the championships and the first time since the course was redesigned earlier this season. The men's race is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. CT and the women's race will follow at 10:45 a.m. Admission is free for the event and parking in adjacent lots will be $10.
2012 Big Ten Championship Recap
The Minnesota men’s cross country team posted a fifth-place finish with 141 team points at the 2012 Big Ten Championships with John Simons pacing the Gophers with an 11th-place finish.
Simons was the first Gopher to cross the finish line of the 8,000 meter course, doing so in 24:09 to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Pieter Gagnon led a three-man contingency of Gophers across the line moments later, finishing the day in 26th with a time of 24:31. Behind Gagnon were teammates Derek Storkel in 30th at 24:34 and Andrew Larsen in 32nd with a time of 24:35. Marcus Paulson closed out Minnesota’s scoring at the Big Ten Championships in 42nd with a time of 24:45.
Minnesota will send a contingency of runners to the Fall Finale next Friday in Collegeville, Minn., to close out the regular season. The Gophers will then compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 in Ames, Iowa.
