No. 1 Wisconsin dominated the Griak Men's Gold Race field, winning its 11th Griak title at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday. The Badgers placed six runners in the top 10 to tally 21 team points, 81 better than runner-up Butler's total of 102.
Griak host Minnesota placed fourth with 180 points, one of the top finishes in school history in the 19-year history of the event. The Golden Gophers' top finish was third in 1997, wile they also placed fourth in 1989.
Wisconsin senior Matt Tegenkamp won his second individual Griak title of his career, covering the 8-kilometer in a time of 24:02. Tegenkamp also won the title in 2001. Badger junior Simon Bairu was second in 24:07, while teammate sophomore Chris Solinsky finished third in 24:11.
"This race is a good marker of where we are as a team," said Tegenkamp. "The Griak tested us in a big meet and we ran our own race."
Minnesota head coach Steve Plasencia was pleased with the performance of his No. 16-ranked Gophers. "We performed well," said Plasencia. "Wisconsin showed their dominance which was not unexpected. We had a solid performance but we can run better. This is a god place to start."
Minnesota was led by senior Andrew Carlson, who placed sixth overall in a time of 24:25. Carlosn's top was the highest for a Golden Gopher, bettering Jeremy Polson's ninth-place showing in 1997.
Also scoring for the Gophers were Ryan Malmin (24:58); Ryan Ford (25:32), Antonio Vega (25:30) and Justin Grunewald (25: 44).
