Former Minnesota cross country/track athlete Andrew Carlson has earned a spot on the U.S. team that will compete in the 2006 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Road Running Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, on Oct. 8. The 20-kilometer race will offer a total of $245,000 in prize money.

The race is a team-scored event. The field will run on a 5,000-meter loop through the city of Debrecen with the top three athletes scoring.

Carlson, a two-time All-American with the Gophers, worked his way onto the U.S. team by placing fifth in the USA Men’s Half Marathon Championships with a time of 1:03.20. He also posted a runner-up finish at the USA Men’s 10 Mile Championship in April and a third-place showing at the USA 20-kilometer Championships.
