Gophers Camp Blog: Day Four
Sept. 6, 2016

Training never ends for the University of Minnesota men’s cross country program, and this week is no different for the Gophers.

To kick off the 2016 campaign, the Maroon & Gold are off to Nevis, Minn., for the team’s annual preseason training camp in Northern Minnesota.

Throughout camp, GopherSports.com will have regular reports coming directly from members of the team. Today’s report comes from redshirt sophomore Sam Carlson.

“Today at camp was quite full of competition and beautiful weather. The calm, cool, morning dawned a great day for running, badminton, and Nevis Cup activities.

The team started the morning with an easy 40-70 minute run, once again on the dirt four-wheeler trails just north of Emmaville, Minn. Post run there was much socializing and drinking of coffee as Bunch prepared another fabulous lunch for the team.

Some heated rounds of badminton were played and many men were sent running off the dock after elimination from the tournament. After lunch, we headed into Nevis for event No. 5 of the Nevis cup. Team Grey battled Team Maroon in a best of three, 6-man volleyball tournament on the sand court. It was excellent competition but in the end, Grey prevailed by a score of two games to none. With newfound energy, the Grey team was ready for the potential finale of trivia, which was set to take place at 8 p.m. back in the camp office. Post volleyball there was much badminton to be played, with the final four remaining competitors being Alex Plasencia, Charlie Lawrence, Hunter Staack, and Wayde Hall. Alex being the only undefeated person remaining.

The afternoon workout was a mix of easy runs for some followed by core work and hurdle mobility for all. Supper of spaghetti and meatballs prepared by Bunch was once again excellent and well received by the team in anticipation of the traditional long run tomorrow morning.

After supper and a few highly competitive games of ring toss between Alex and Obsa (usually ending in one of them taking a jump in the lake), everyone headed to the office for trivia showdown. There was a general buzz of excitement as everyone knew that the cup was in the building this evening. Categories were announced; Paralympics, All About the 70s, All About Blueberries, University of Minnesota Alumni, Rocky Mountains, Celebrity Couples, and The Tax Man. It was mentally taxing and there was much discussion, but in the end, Grey team was victorious and celebrated a Nevis Cup victory with all the sportsmanship in the world.

At the time of publication there was discussion of a campfire, but the remainder of this evenings activities will need to be recorded in the final full day blog tomorrow.”
