The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked the Golden Gophers No. 18 nationally in its preseason poll. The USTFCCCA selected Minnesota to fourth in the Midwest region preseason poll earlier this week.
Wisconsin was selected as the preseason No. 1 with 357 total votes and 10 of 12 first-place votes. The Gophers were the third highest Big Ten team ranked in the poll with Indiana sitting at No. 13 with 206 votes.
Four Big Ten teams are listed among the top 30 in the preseason poll, with Michigan rounding out the conference's ranking one spot behind Minnesota with 131 votes. The Big Ten also had two programs receive votes outside of the top 30 in Ohio State (21 votes) and Michigan State (one vote).
Minnesota kicks off the 2012 season - the 17th season under Director of Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Steve Plasencia - on Sept. 7 with the Oz Memorial at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
