AMES, Iowa – Senior Obsa Ali set a University of Minnesota men’s cross country 10-kilometer school record on Friday morning at the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional, snapping Minnesota Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia’s 41-year old school record.
A native of Richfield, Minn., Obsa Ali finished the 10-kilometer race at the ISU Cross Country Course in 29:23.06, besting Plasencia’s 29:26.0 from the 1976 NCAA Championships. The senior finished 13th overall in the competition to lead the Maroon & Gold and earn his third NCAA All-Region honor.
“I’m certainly happy for Obsa. He’s done a really great job for us, and he has a lot to be proud of with everything he’s accomplished including today’s school record,” Plasencia said. “As a team, things just didn’t seem to break our way today. We had a lot of guys put up good times, but we just didn’t do quite enough to get where we wanted to be.”
The Gophers finished fifth as a team with 144 points in the race, behind Iowa State (69), Oklahoma State (74), Tulsa (98) and Illinois (98). Illinois’ Johnathan Davis won the individual title at 29:06.14.
Minnesota’s top three finishers all jumped into the school’s all-time top-10 list while all five scorers would have if not for other Gophers on Friday.
In addition to Obsa Ali’s school record, Connor Olson added his first career NCAA All-Region honor after finishing 25th overall. Olson’s time of 29:43.39 now ranks third in school history. Alec Basten jumped into sixth on the school’s top-10 list with a time of 29:48.61 to finish 29th.
Evan Ferlic finished 37th with a time of 29:59.61 and Hamza Ali came in 40th at 30:01.80 to round out Minnesota’s scoring for the meet. Joey Duerr (30:29.27, 72nd) and Charlie Lawrence (30:29.45, 74th) also competed for the Maroon & Gold.
