LOUISVILLE, Ky. (GopherSports.com) – Adam Zutz ran the best eight-kilometer race of his Gophers career to pace the University of Minnesota men’s cross country team in a 24th-place finish on Saturday morning at the Pre-National Meet.
The Gophers totaled 645 points in the 42-team competition at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, which will host this year’s NCAA cross country championships on Nov. 21. Two-time defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Colorado won the meet with 89 points – the only squad to break 100 on the day.
A redshirt senior captain from St. Francis, Minn., Zutz clocked a 23:53.1 on Saturday to finish 44th overall among nearly 300 competitors and improve his personal eight-kilometer record by more than 30 seconds.
“Today was a learning experience for our guys in terms of what they need to do to succeed in major Division I races,” Minnesota Director of Men’s Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. “Hopefully what we learned today will help us in two weeks when we go to the Big Ten meet.”
Redshirt sophomore Charlie Lawrence just missed his personal record for the Gophers, coming in at 91st with a time of 24:16.1.
The Maroon & Gold hit another personal record with Riley Macon’s 24:41.8 as the redshirt junior finished 160th, three spots ahead of sophomore Obsa Ali in 163rd at 24:42.4. Redshirt senior captain Christian Skaret closed out the team’s scoring on Saturday with a 187th-place finish and a time of 24:50.5.
Outside of Minnesota’s scoring group, Matt Welch was less than a second off his personal record at 25:21.5 to finish 255th while Sam Carlson did hit a new best at 25:28.0 in 265th.
Virginia Tech’s Thomas Curtin won the Pre-National Meet with a time of 23:18.2.
