FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (GopherSports.com) – The University of Minnesota men’s cross country program posted a fourth-place finish at the 32nd annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday with three Gophers finishing among the top-25 finishers.
Competing at Les Bolstad Golf Course, Charlie Lawrence, Obsa Ali and Derek Wiebke were among the top-25 while Minnesota totaled 135 points in fourth place. Colorado State won the team title with 47 points including Jerrell Mock’s repeat as individual champion with Michigan State finishing second (55 points) and UCLA finishing third (63 points).
“We had some difficult conditions to run in today, and that certainly didn’t make things easy for anybody,” Minnesota Director of Men’s Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. “I thought we had a couple nice performances today despite the weather, and it’s always great to come out and celebrate Coach Griak’s legacy here at the University of Minnesota and in the cross country community.”
Lawrence led the Gophers for the second time this year, running 25:37.9 to finish 12th overall – the Minnesota captain’s best career finish at the Roy Griak Invitational. Ali made his season debut on Saturday, finishing 21st in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 25:52.5). Wiebke added a third top-25 finish for the Maroon & Gold as Minnesota’s other captain clocked a 25:58.1 to finish 25th.
Alec Basten and Hamza Ali rounded out the team scoring for the Gophers. Basten finished 29th at 26:04.3 while Ali came in 54th at 26:41.4.
The Gophers return to action next month with the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 13 and the Jim Drews Invitational on Oct. 14.
