A native of Richfield, Minn., Obsa Ali finished the 10-kilometer race at the ISU Cross Country Course in 29:23.06, besting Plasencia’s 29:26.0 from the 1976 NCAA Championships.
The Gophers totaled 142 points in the men’s eight-kilometer competition, which was hosted by Indiana at the IU Championship Cross Country Course.
The University of Minnesota men's cross country program returned to action with a 12th-place finish at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational.
Competing at Les Bolstad Golf Course, Charlie Lawrence, Obsa Ali and Derek Wiebke were among the top-25 while Minnesota totaled 135 points in fourth place.
The Maroon & Gold combined for 205 points at Friday’s 10-kilometer race in Iowa City, Iowa.

Competed in five meets for the Gophers • factored into the team's score in four meets • made his collegiate debut at the UC Riverside Invitational and helped the Maroon & Gold to a team title • finished 25th at the event with a time of 24:54.2 • finished 34th at the Griak Invitational with a time of 25:42.0 • finished 145th overall (141st among scorers) with a time of 24:57 at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational • placed 26th at the Big Ten Championship with a time of 24:15.5, a then personal best • finished 39th at the 2014 NCAA Midwest Regional with a time of 30:52.9 • earned first letter.
A 2014 graduate of Richfield High School • a two-time Nike All-American in cross country • ended his prep career with seven total medals in state cross country and track & field competition • won the 2014 Minnesota State AA cross country title as a senior with a time of 15:15 after finishing second at the meet as a junior • also won the 2014 state 3,200 meter title with a new all-time record of 8:57 as a junior in track • was a two-time all-state honorary in cross country and a three-time all-state honorary in track & field • earned a total of nine all-conference accolades as a prep (four in track & field, two in cross country, two in wrestling and one in soccer) • holds Richfiled High School records for the 5,000 meters (14:57) and the 3,200 meters (8:57) • a two-time high school individual champion at the Roy Griak Invitational.
