GopherSports.com caught up with one of the newest members of the Maroon & Gold as he kicks off his first year with the program.
The women's six-kilometer race is slated for 11 a.m. CT with the men's 10-kilometer competition following at noon.
Ali continues a dominant history at the meet by the Maroon & Gold that dates back to David Van Orsdel’s win in 2006.
Fourteen women's teams and 12 men's teams will toe the line at Les Bolstad Course for the 2016 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday.
Ali is the second-straight Gopher to win the race following Eric Colvin’s 2015 title.
2016 | FRESHMAN SEASON
Redshirted • ran in three college meets as an unattached competitor • placed 31st at the four-mile Oz Memorial (21:18.3) • finished 223rd at the eight-kilometer Roy Griak Invitational (28:04.7) • closed out the college season by placing ninth at the eight-kilometer Fall Finale (26:37) • also finished seventh at the 2016 Twin Cities 5K (15:50).
A 2016 graduate of Hopkins High School • closed out his prep career with a state championship in the 4x800 meter relay • helped Hopkins capture the 2015 state cross country title and the 2014 state track & field title • a two-time all-state and all-conference selection as a senior (cross country and track) • also earned all-section honors in cross country as a senior • the 2015 Lake Conference cross country champion and a member of the 2016 Lake Conference champion 4x800 meter relay team • three-time all-conference honorable mention (2013, 2014 in cross country, 2015-16 in hockey) • earned a total of 10 letters (four in cross country, three in track, three in hockey) • holds the Hopkins High School record in the 4x800 meter relay (7:44) • high school teammate of fellow Gopher Owen Hoeft • competed for coaches Mike Harris, Corey Petterson and Nick Lovas • graduated with academic distinction from Hopkins • also played AAA hockey with the Minnesota Blades and the Minnesota Icemen.
