MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 2 University of Minnesota wrestling team will kick off 2014 by competing in the Southern Scuffle hosted by the University of Tennesee at Chattanooga. The Southern Scuffle, one of the largest in-season tournaments in college wrestling, will host 500 wrestlers from around the country at McKenzie Arena on Jan. 1-2.

The University of Tennesee at Chattanooga released the preseeds for the 2014 Southern Scuffle on Tuesday morning. Ten Golden Gophers are seeded in the tournament including David Thorn, Chris Dardanes, Nick Dardanes, Dylan Ness, Danny Zilverberg, Logan Storley, Kevin Steinhaus, Brett Pfarr, Scott Schiller and Tony Nelson. Out of the ten seeded wrestlers, eight of them are seeded in the top 3 of their respective weight classes.

The tournament will feature top contenders including No. 1 Penn State, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Cornell. Penn State is the three-time defending Scuffle champion. The Golden Gophers have not been named Southern Scuffle champions since 2007.

The Golden Gophers will hit the mat for the first since they defeated No. 4 Oklahoma State, 16-15, in Stillwater, Okla. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
