Dec. 13, 2012
This past weekend, members of the University of Minnesota wrestling team participated in the University of Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Twelve student-athletes competed in the tournament, which featured multiple fellow schools from the Big Ten Conference, with a few making high finishes on the weekend.
Matt Mincey was the Gophers’ top finisher at the event, rolling to a 4-1 overall record for a second-place finish in the 149-pound weight class. Mincey opened with a 15-0 technical fall over Wisconsin’s Lenny Bloom. In the second round, he defeated Joe Ducharme of Iowa by a 4-2 major decision. Mincey followed with two decision wins over Caleb Ervin (Illinois) and Zach Witte (Northern Iowa) to earn a spot in the finals, in which he fell to Northwestern’s Jason Tsirtsis.
Brett Pfarr had another successful showing at 184 lbs. He began with a three-match streak but fell to Sam Brooks of Iowa (5-4 decision) in the semifinals to move to the backdraw. Pfarr defeated Purdue’s Patrick Kissel, 6-1, then scored a 6-4 decision over Illinois’ Jeff Koepke to finish third.
In the heavyweight bracket, Michael Kroells also took third place. Much like Pfarr, Kroells started the day strong, defeating Darius Lewis (Lindenwood) and Ben Schnurr (Iowa Central College) by falls at 4:42 and 2:56, respectively. Kroells earned a 9-0 major over Upper Iowa’s Zach Rosol in the quarterfinals. While he fell in the semifinals by a 6-4 decision, he rebounded in the backdraw for a third pin of the day (4:51) to advance to the third-place match.
