Four Gophers Win Titles at Finn Grinaker Cobber Open

A total of 14 wrestlers from the University of Minnesota competed unattached at the 2012 Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, with all but two finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes. Four individuals went undefeated over the weekend to be crowned champions.
Junior college transfer Conrad Rangell took the title at 149 lbs., defeating opponents from Dickson State (DSU), University of Mary, and St. Cloud State (SCS). After notching an 11-2 major decision over SCS’s Josh Howk to advance to the final bout, Rangell captured the title with a 6-3 decision over Brad Steele (DSU).
Danny Zilverberg was crowned the 157-pound champion with a 4-0 sweep of the competition. Zilverberg tallied a major decision, a technical fall, and a decision in the first three rounds before downing Northern Iowa’s David Bonin, 3-1, in the final.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Brett Pfarr opened his stay at the tournament by pinning Adam Lizaola at the 4:08 mark. Pfarr flew past NDSU’s Kody Sorenson (11-3 major decision) in the semifinals and defeated Shamus O’Grady (SCS), 8-5, in the finals for the crown.
At 197 lbs., Joel Bauman also compiled a 3-0 record to the championship after a first-round bye. Bauman defeated Martin Hagen of Southwest Minnesota State, 8-4, in the quarterfinals and Northern Iowa’s AJ Mcbroom, 18-9, in the semifinals. He then notched a 7-3 decision over Chris Brassell of St. Cloud State.
