Freshman Drew Lexvold led a small contingent of Minnesota wrestlers over the weekend at the UNI Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Lexvold, one of four Golden Gophers to compete at the event, earned the 133 lbs. title after going 4-0 to earn the title.
Entering the weekend with a 13-3 record, Lexvold followed a first-round bye with a win over Missouri's Eric Wilson via fall at 2:20. The freshman advanced to the semifinals after Joe Duca of Indiana was unable to continue, and Lexvold was credited with his third fall of the day when he pinned Kyle Pedretti of Upper Iowa in 4:34 to advance to the finals. There, he edged Northern Iowa's Ryan Jauch with a 7-6 decision to earn his first career title.
Also placing for Minnesota was freshman Corey Hodowanic at 125 lbs. The freshman placed sixth after going 3-2 at the UNI Open. Hodowanic opened the day with a 7-1 decision over David Demo of MSUK before dropping an 8-3 decision to Northern Iowa's Caleb Flores. But the 125 pounder battled back with a 4-1 decision over MSUK's Chase Lebos and an 8-0 major decision over Iowa's Matt Gurule before falling to Iowa State's Ryak Finch via technical fall (15-0). Finch would go on to place third in the 125 lbs. bracket.
Redshirt sophomore Steven Avalos and freshman Randy Hanson also competed at the UNI Open, each going 1-2 at the event in their respective weight classes.
