On Friday, Oct. 27, the University of Minnesota wrestling team will open their doors to its wrestling room for the annual coaches’ clinic, which will take place at the Bierman Field Athletic Building.
The clinic is open to coaches, fans and wrestlers of all ages. Guest instructors will be alongside head coach Brandon Eggum and head assistant Luke Becker and their staff. They will display the Gopher program while also offering professional instruction on the fundamentals and techniques of coaching wrestling.
The 2017 Coaches’ Clinic guest instructors include Max Askren, John Parenti II and Hayden Zillmer.
Hayden Zillmer may be the most recognized name among the group to Gopher fans. Zillmer is a three-time Minnesota state champion, and an NCAA All-American with North Dakota State University and a 2017 Greco World team member and 2017 Freestyle World team member.
Also joining the clinic is John Parenti II, who is currently the University of Minnesota Director of Nutrition. Max Askren joins the clinic as another wrestling specialist. He was a NCAA Champion in 2010, and was a three-time NCAA All-American. He is the co-founder of Askren Wrestling Academy, and was a two-time Big 12 champion. Askren has experienced success at every level, he hails from Wisconsin where he was also a state champion in high school.
Following registration, Eggum will welcome participants and provide a look ahead to the upcoming season for the Gophers. Askren will then take over to go over techniques and offering tips both on and off the mat. Following Askren, Parenti will talk about aspects of nutrition for wrestling, and how to properly balance them. Askren will take over for another session after, and then there will be a dinner and live practice. Hayden Zillmer will be the last to teach technique at the end of the day in the wrestling room.
Following the day, all are invited to an on-campus social.
