Three Top-Five Finishes Highlight Fargo 2017
July 18, 2017

Four Minnesota signees were competing at Fargo this week at the Junior National Championships, with three of them finishing in the top five in their respective weight classes. Due to NCAA rules, only future Gophers who have signed a National Letter of Intent can be featured here.

Brent Jones of Shakopee, Minn. was the Gophers top finisher with a third-place finish in the 132-pound tournament. He cruised through the first few rounds, but was upended in the round of 16. Jones then ripped off six straight victories (three by tech), highlighted by falls in just 35 and 73-seconds to wrap up his last two matches.

Jakob Bergeland, who hails from Centennial, Minn. wrapped up his Fargo trip with a fourth-place finish in the 138-pound tournament. Bergeland won his first four matches all by tech, but was knocked into the consolation bracket in the quarterfinals.

Bergeland responded with three dominant performances to reach the third-place match. He shutout two straight opponents and then secured a tech fall, 14-1, to obtain his spot in the bronze match.
In that match, Bergeland fired back and forth with his opponent. A high-paced bout ended with Bergeland losing by decision, 18-17, and he settled for fourth-place.

St. Michael-Albertville (Minn.) standout Jake Allar represented the Gophers in the 160-pound tournament. The defending Fargo champion drew a first-round bye, and then went to work, dominating in his first four matches by tech, all of them by scores of 10-0.

Allar ran into trouble in the semi finals, where he fell in an intense back-and-forth match with Tyler Dow. He dropped a decision 12-11 decision and moved into the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match, Allar again had a tough matchup, and lost by another 12-11 score to move to the fifth place match. In the fifth-place match, Allar medically forfeited and settled for sixth-place at Fargo.

The final signed Gopher at the Fargo dome this week was Alex Crowe of Shakopee, Minn., who reached the round of 16 before losing a close 8-6 decision.

Moving into the consolation bracket, Crowe breezed through the top 16 with a 16-5 tech victory, then a shutout tech to advance once again. With a 10-4 loss in his next match, Crowe was unable to qualify for the fifth or seventh-place match.
