Rochester, Minn. – Beginning on Friday at 10:00 a.m., the nation’s best freestyle wrestlers will take the mats at the RCTC Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minn. in pursuit of their World Championship Team dream.
There is a total of 11 Minnesota freestyle wrestlers who have qualified for the challenge tournament, with four of them being on the junior level and eight being on the senior level. Gable Steveson is set to compete in both junior and senior levels, which was announced last week during the 2018 Gopher Road Trip.
On the senior level, Carson Brolsma, Zach Sanders, Jayson Ness, Dylan Ness, Joe Rau, Hayden Zillmer, Tony Nelson and Steveson will compete after automatically qualifying at the U.S. Open just a few weeks ago.
Jakob Bergeland, Owen Webster and Brayton Lee will join Steveson on the junior level. By finishing in the top eight in the 2017 UWW Junior National Tournament, Webster secured a spot in the junior tournament while Bergeland was a top six finisher at the 2017 Junior Fargo Nationals to earn his own spot in the event this weekend.
You can read up here on all of these wrestlers finishes at the U.S. Open that concluded on April 28 in Las Vegas.
On the senior level, wrestlers will look to win the challenge tournament in order to earn the right to challenge the U.S. Open champion in a best of three series. The winner of the best of three series will then take on any previous world medalist at Final X which has various dates at various locations in the coming months.
For the juniors, a spot on the World Team will be on the line in Rochester. The winner of the challenge tournament will take on the U.S. Open winner in a best of three series, with the winner officially earning a spot on the U.S. team at the 2018 UWW Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia in September.
Coaches that will be in Rochester will include Jared Lawrence, Brandon Eggum, Luke Becker, Trevor Brandvold and Dustin Schlatter.
