MINNEAPOLIS -- The Big Ten Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon that University of Minnesota redshirt freshman, Sam Brancale, was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after a dominating performance against Iowa over the weekend.
Brancale started off the Iowa dual with six crucial points for the Golden Gophers as he pinned No. 3 Tom Gilman of Iowa in 2:03. With the help of Brancale's noteworthy performance, Minnesota would eventually go on to win the dual over second-ranked Iowa, 19-15.
This is Brancale's first weekly honor and the first since redshirt junior, Scott Schiller, picked up the award earlier this season. For the full release from the Big Ten Conference, please visit their website.
The Gophers will return to the Sports Pavilion to host Indiana this weekend on Sunday afternoon. Due to the Super Bowl, the dual will begin at noon.
