All-American as a freshman • co-Most Outstanding Freshman team award recipient with Tony Nelson • voted Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, Dec. 14 • 34-12 overall in first year with the Gophers, 14-6 in duals meets and a 5-2 record in the Big Ten • had one pin, two technical falls and tied for first on the team with Zach Anderson in recording 11 wins by major decisions and 34 wins • finished as the runner-up in the 2011 Big Ten Championships • made his first-career appearance at the NCAA championships and finished eighth • opened the year with a 4-0 showing at the Bison Open, after beating his opponents by a combined score of 54-20 to earn his first Golden Gopher title • finished second at the Kaufman-Brand Open with a 4-1 record; only loss was a 2-1 decision in the finals• finished third at the Southern Scuffle with a 6-1 record • went 10-1 in December • in January Steinhaus took care of Iowa States' Richard Shafer in a demolishing 18-2 technical fall victory • earned his first letter.

Winner of the team Academic Award with the highest GPA among the freshman class • posted a 20-3 record in his first season at Minnesota, competing solely in open meets • was one of eight Gophers to log 20 or more wins on the season, and the only freshman to do so • went 11-3 at 174 in the first half of the season and 9-0 at 184 in the second half • won two matches by pin and 11 by major decision, tying Mike Thorn for the team lead • ended the season on an 11-match winning streak, and won 18 of his last 19 bouts • first collegiate win came in his first career match, over Phillip Downs of Northern State 13-3 on 11/14 • champion at the North Country Open on 1/30, going 5-0 and beating Mic Berg of St. Cloud State 4-3 in the championship match • champion at the Worthington Open on 1/16, going 4-0 and beating Mic Berg of St. Cloud State 5-2 in the championship match • placed thirds at the Dragon Open on 12/5, going 4-1 beating Carl Serck of Augustana in the third place match and with his only blemish a 0-2 setback to Jarrett Hall • champion at the Kaufman-Brand Amateur on 11/21, beating Celb Kolb of Nebraska 4-3 in the Championship match • placed fifth at the Bison Open after a 3-2 mark at the tournament, beating William Fate of Southwest Minnesota in the fifth place match, with his only losses to teammates Scott Glasser and Cody Yohn.
