Brian Deutsch has been selected to join the Minnesota Athletic Communications office as an assistant director of athletic communications, director of athletic communications Garry Bowman announced today.
Deutsch, who will join Minnesota on August 6, will serve as the primary media contact for men's hockey as well as men's cross country and track and field. Deutsch graduated from Minnesota in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and is currently working toward a master's degree in business administration at Robert Morris University.
"I am thrilled to be returning to the University of Minnesota, and it is an honor to be working with the country's premiere college hockey program," Deutsch said. "I would like to thank everyone involved in the hiring process for this incredible opportunity, and I look forward to working with the student-athletes, coaching staff and administration as well as interacting with the passionate fans and media who follow and cover Gopher athletics."
Deutsch comes to Minnesota after serving on the athletic communications staff at Robert Morris University in 2011-12. With the Colonials, he coordinated communications efforts for three Division I programs including men's hockey and assisted in preparations for the 2013 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Pittsburgh. Deutsch also oversaw all social media efforts for the RMU athletic department and was responsible for expanding the Colonial athletics brand through new media opportunities.
"We are excited to have Brian back as a member of the Athletic Communications staff," Bowman said. "His passion for Gopher sports and knowledge of the University of Minnesota and the Twin Cities media landscape will be a huge asset. Brian will hit the ground running and I am confident he will do an outstanding job in his role with both the Gopher men's hockey and cross country/track & field programs."
A native of Luverne, Minn., Deutsch worked for the Minnesota Daily for three years covering Gopher athletics before joining the athletic department. He also served as a post-graduate intern in the Minnesota Athletic Communications office in 2010-11. During that time, he coordinated publicity for Gopher wrestling, soccer and softball. Deutsch also assisted in the day-to-day communication efforts for the Minnesota football team including the hiring of football coach Jerry Kill.
During his career, Deutsch has worked with a variety of organizations and assisted with media operations for many major events including the Big Ten Network, Special Olympics, the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the 2011 NCAA Men's Frozen Four and the 2009 U.S. Pond Hockey Championships.
