MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Luca Wieland and Derek Wiebke of the University of Minnesota men’s track & field and cross country program have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, the organization announced on Friday afternoon.
A three-time Academic All-American, Wieland represented the Maroon & Gold on the Second Team while Wiebke picked up his first career honor as a Third Team selection. Wieland is the fifth Gopher in school history to earn three Academic All-America merits, joining Marie Roethlisberger (women’s gymnastics, 1988, 1989, 1990), Justin Conzemius (football, 1993, 1994, 1995), Andy Hunter (baseball, 2004, 2005, 2006) and John Albert (men’s track & field and cross country, 2004, 2005, 2006).
A native of Saarbrucken, Germany, Wieland was named the 2017 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient for the Gophers and was recently selected as the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. The senior was a three-time First Team All-American (earning the honor once in the decathlon and twice in the heptathlon) including his 2015 NCAA title in the heptathlon – making Wieland the 13th national champion in school history. Wieland also picked up four Big Ten titles for the Maroon & Gold, winning two decathlon championships as well as one heptathlon title and an outdoor high jump crown in 2017. He also set three school records as a senior, setting new marks in the decathlon (8,201 points), the heptathlon (6,070 points) and the outdoor 4x100 meter relay (39.80). An entrepreneurial management major, Wieland is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
A native of Kasson, Minn., Wiebke won the 2017 Big Ten indoor mile and is a two-time All-Big Ten selection. His winning mark of 4:01.85 was a personal record and ranks fourth all-time on Minnesota’s top performers list. He also earned Second Team All-America accolades as a member of the Gophers distance medley relay squad during the indoor campaign and clocked the third-fastest time in program history at 9:30.48. Wiebke also competes for the Minnesota cross country team. A German, Scandinavian and Dutch studies major, he is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
