DES MOINES, Iowa -- Harun Abda set a new school 800 meters record, and Wally Ellenson qualified for the 2013 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships in the high jump on Friday at the 2013 U.S. Track and Field Championships.
Abda clocked a 1:46.38 in Friday's 800 meter semifinals at Drake Stadium to claim a new Minnesota record. The All-American finished 12th, but did not advance to the 800 meter finals.
Ellenson, meanwhile, finished second in the high jump at the 2013 U.S. Junior Championships to qualify for the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships. The freshman cleared 7-00.5 ft. (2.15 meters) to advance and will represent the U.S. next August in Medellin, Colombia.
Quentin Mege also represented the Gophers on Friday at the U.S Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, finishing 14th in the hammer throw with a toss of 206-09 ft. (63.02 meters).
Wieland, Wiebke Earn Academic All-America
A three-time Academic All-American, Wieland represented the Maroon & Gold on the Second Team while Wiebke picked up his first career honor as a Third Team selection.
Mead Wins USATF 10,000 Meters
Mead’s title on Friday snapped Galen Rupp’s streak of eight consecutive USATF 10,000 meter championships.
Incoming Gophers Earn Track & Field Honors
Dawson LaRance was named the Montana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Hunter Lucas was named the North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
