DES MOINES, Iowa – Harun Abda ran his fastest 800 meters of the season at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday as the Minnesota men’s track and field team began competition.
In the fastest heat of the day, Abda clocked a 1:47.02 time to finish sixth overall in Thursday’s opening round of competition as the First Team All-American qualified for Friday’s semifinals. Fellow Gopher First Team All-American Travis Burkstrand finished 21st overall in the preliminary heats with a time of 1:49.49.
Abda and Burkstrand were the first of four student-athletes with Minnesota ties to compete this weekend at Drake Stadium. Second Team All-American Quentin Mege will compete in the hammer throw on Friday evening while First Team All-American Wally Ellenson is scheduled to compete in the high jump on Friday as part of the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Gophers Earn USTFCCCA Academic Merits
Eight Gophers earned individual honors while Minnesota also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
Blankenship Joins Mead on Olympic Team
A native of Stillwater, Minn., Blankenship took third in the 1,500 meter final at Hayward Field, clocking a 3:36.18.
Mead Punches Olympic Ticket
The Minneapolis, Minn., native ran a 13:35.70 at Hayward Field to earn his first bid to the Olympics.
