MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Seven signed Gophers track & field prospects combined for 13 state championships during the 2016-17 academic year as the future competitors for the Maroon & Gold wrap up their prep careers.
Anthony Fleischfresser | Jumps | Spring Lake Park High School
After capturing the Minnesota Class AA state title in the high jump last year, Fleischfresser repeated as a state champion in 2017…just in a different event. The senior was the 2017 MSHSL Class AA state champion in the long jump, winning the event at 22-10.75 ft. He also finished third in the high jump.
Mike Herauf | Multi-Events/Pole Vault | Dickinson High School
Herauf capped his prep career by repeating at the North Dakota Class A state champion in the pole vault, setting a new state record at 15-07 ft.
Dawson LaRance | Mid-Distance/Distance | Billings Senior High School
LaRance captured three Montana Class AA state championships as a senior last month. He broke a 31-year-old Montana state record in the 800 meters when he ran 1:50.22 to repeat as the state Class AA champion. He also picked up titles in the 1,600 meters at 4:15.51 and was part of Billings Senior’s Class AA record-setting win in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:18.01. LaRance later clocked a 1:49.63 at the Portland Track Festival – registering the fourth fastest 800 meters by a U.S. high school athlete this year.
Hunter Lucas | Distance | Fargo Davies High School
Lucas also claimed a trio of state track & field titles to close out his high school career, winning North Dakota Class A championships in the 800 meters at 1:55.45, the 1,600 meters at 4:13.81 and the 3,200 meters at 9:21.09. Lucas, who repeated as state champion in both the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters, was named the North Dakota Class A Outstanding Student-Athlete. He also picked up the Class A state cross country title as a senior.
Ben Psicihulis | Mid-Distance | Kettle Moraine High School
Behind a monster leg from Psicihulis, Kettle Moraine ran a school record for the second-straight day to win the Wisconsin Division I state 4x400 title. The squad clocked a 3:18.10 while Psicihulis also added a runner-up showing in the 400 meters.
Patrick Roos | Distance | Edina High School
Roos clocked a 15:36 (five kilometers) to claim the 2016 MSHSL Class AA state cross country title last fall.
Collin Sieffert | Sprints/Hurdles | East Ridge High School
Sieffert closed out his prep career with his first two career state championships while helping East Ridge to the school’s first team state title. Sieffert ran on East Ridge’s 4x200 meter relay team, which finished first with a time of 1:27.17, as well as the 4x400 meter relay, which won at 3:20.59. He also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Wieland, Wiebke Earn Academic All-America
A three-time Academic All-American, Wieland represented the Maroon & Gold on the Second Team while Wiebke picked up his first career honor as a Third Team selection.
Mead Wins USATF 10,000 Meters
Mead’s title on Friday snapped Galen Rupp’s streak of eight consecutive USATF 10,000 meter championships.
Incoming Gophers Earn Track & Field Honors
Dawson LaRance was named the Montana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Hunter Lucas was named the North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
