Gophers' director of men's track and field/cross country Steve Plasencia added to his stable of quality middle distance runners today with the signing of junior college transfer Jeffrey Cottrell to a national letter of intent.
A native of Hermantown, Minn., Cottrell comes to Minnesota from Spokane Falls Community College, where he earned All-America honors in both the 800 meters and as a member of the school's 4x400 relay team.
During the 2012 season, Cottrell clocked fourth-best 800 meter time in school history (1:50.83). It was also the conference's top time for 2012. Cottrell also competed in the 1500 meters and ran cross country while at Spokane.
As a prep, Cottrell was a six-time letterwinner in cross country and four-time letter winner in track and field. He went on to earn All-Lake Superior Conference cross country accolades in 2007, 2008 and 2008, and picked up all-league honors on the track in 2008, 2009 and 2010. As a senior, he was selected as the team's captain and MVP for both cross country and track and field.
Cottrell will join the Gophers' program in the fall.
