MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -- A busy 2014 outdoor season continues this weekend for the University of Minnesota men's track & field team with the Gophers sending student-athletes near and far to three meets over the next several days.
The Gophers will send a large contingency of competitors to Iowa's Musco Twilight on Saturday in Iowa City while All-American John Simons will close out the weekend on Sunday at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford.
Minnesota will also have a handful of competitors at Hamline's Meet of the UnSaintly in St. Paul.
Musco Twilight Preview
Minnesota will join host Iowa as well as UNI, Drake, Iowa State, Nebraska and Illinois at the 15th annual Musco Twilight on Saturday night. The meet is set to be held at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track with field events beginning at 1 p.m. CT and running events following at 5 p.m. CT.
With the majority of Gophers heading to compete in Iowa, the Gophers will return several notable performers from last year's squad.
Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational Preview
John Simons will run his first 5,000 meters of the season on Sunday at the 19th annual Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. The marquee event of the meet, the 5,000 is tentatively set for 10:50 p.m. CT on Sunday at Cobb Track.
In an extremely talented field that includes former Gophers great Hassan Mead, Simons will look to replicate his performance at the event from a year ago when he tallied a 13:49.65 for a personal record. The mark stands as the ninth-fastest 5,000 ever at Minnesota while only four runners (Mead, Andrew Carlson, Chris Rombough and current Gophers coach Steve Plasencia have clocked faster times for Minnesota. Mead holds the Gophers record in the 5,000 at 13:28.45.
