Minnesota's Busy Weekend Highlighted by Drake Relays
The Minnesota men's outdoor track and field program returns to action with its busiest weekend of the season including the 104th annual Drake Relays. The Gophers will also send contingencies to the Macalester/Bolstorff Twilight, the UCSD Triton Invitational and the Stanford Payton Jordan Invitational as the team prepares for the Big Ten championships next month.
2013 Drake Relays Preview
The weekend officially gets underway on Thursday afternoon as Minnesota competes in the 104th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. A total of 8,000 athletes including over 1,000 men's competitors in the university/college level are set to compete this weekend.
Minnesota is the the two-time defending champion in the distance medley relay (DMR) and the 4x800 meter relay at the Drake Relays. The relay team of Nick Hutton, Harun Abda, Travis Burkstrand and Davich Pachuta clocked a time of 9:36.21 in the DMR last year to top Minnesota's previous school record, set in 1977 (Director of Men's Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia was a member of that relay team). The quartet also won the 2012 Drake Relays 4x800 with a time of 7:19.02.
2013 Macalester/Bolstorff Twilight
The Gophers will also have a contingency of competitors in action on Thursday at the 2013 Macalester/Bolstoff Twilight in St. Paul. Minnesota will send a large group of throwers, sprinters, hurdle jumps, and a number of red-shirts to the local meet.
Minnesota finished first at the meet last year with a total of 181.5 points andcaptured eight individual titles on a chilly afternoon.
Minnesota continues action this weekend with a pair of meets in California. The Gophers throwers will head to the 2013 UCSD Triton Invitational while a small contingency of runners will make the trek to Palo Alto for the 2013 Stanford Payton Jordan Invitational.
Minnesota alum Hassan Meda set a new record in the 10,000 meters at last year's meet in Palo Alto, clocking a time of 28:12.74 -- breaking Garry Bjorklund's 1974 record of 28:24.40.
