THIS WEEKEND IN MINNESOTA TRACK AND FIELD
The Minnesota men's track & field team will head to Arizona State this weekend for the ASU Invitational. Minnesota will compete on Saturday March 24 at the Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium. This will be the first outdoor event of the 2012 season for the track portion of the team, as last weekend the throwers opened up the season in San Diego.
Action is set to get underway starting at 1 p.m. with the discus throw. The high jump will be the first event a Golden Gopher competes in and that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. A few notable teams that will be in attendance this weekend are Air Force, Kansas State and Iowa State.
START OF THE OUTDOOR SEASON
Minnesota wrapped the indoor season with a runner-up finish at the Big Ten championships and tied for 18th at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field championships. Seven individuals were earned All-American accolades for their performance at the championships. Micah Hegere (weight throw), David Pachuta (800m and 4x400), Kevin Bradley (4x400), John Holton (4x400), Harun Abda (4x400) and Hassan Mead (5,000m).
Abda was named the Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year and assistant coach Paul Thornton was named Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Abda won Big Ten titles in the 400 Meters and 600 Meters, setting a conference record in the 600 Meters in the process. His season-best time of 1:46.97 in the 800 Meters is the fastest recorded this indoor season.
B1G HONOR FOR DAVIS
Minnesota senior Trey Davis was named the Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at last weekend’s Aztec Invitational. Davis kicked off the 2012 outdoor season with titles in both the shot put and discus throw in San Diego, Calif.
The Farmington, Minn., native landed a throw of 58-0 ¼ (17.68m) in the shot put, which ranks him sixth in the nation. Davis hit a mark of 177-2 (54.01m) in the discus and currently sits at ninth in the country.
Looking forward to next weekend the Gophers throwers will be the lone group to compete. They will head to the Texas Relays March 30-31.
THE GOLDEN GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Steve Plasencia enters his fourth season as the Golden Gophers head men's track & field coach. Plasencia was Plasencia was awarded his fifth consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year award, adding the 2011 indoor accolade to those from the 2009 and 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons. Plasencia heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Scott Berggren, Paul Thornton, Lynden Reder, Steve White and Roy Griak.
