The University of Minnesota men’s indoor track & field team returns to action this weekend at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day meet begins Friday, Feb. 28 and wraps up on Saturday, March 1.
Lehman Faces Top Competition
Senior captain Jon Lehman re-set his own school record in the weight throw last Friday at the Snowshoe Open. Lehman won the event with a toss of 22.98 meters (75-04.75 ft.) -- a distance that ranks third nationally entering the weekend. The Gophers senior will compete with some of the best in the nation this weekend as the Big Ten features the top four marks in the nation this season in the weight throw.
Siegmeier Aims for Second Big Ten Title
Senior Zach Siegmeier is the defending Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field champion in the pole vault and will go for his second conference title this weekend in Ohio. Siegmeier cleared 5.45 meters (17-10.50 ft.) to win the pole vault at last weekend’s Snowshoe Open. The senior’s mark stands as the 10th best performance in the nation this season and the second best in the Big Ten.
DMR Speeds Up in Final Prep
The Gophers' distance medley relay (DMR) team of Alex Brend, Bradley Johnson, Goaner Deng and John Simons ran the third-fastest time in program history last Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invite - clocking a 9:31.94.
Honoring Roy Griak
The 2014 Minnesota men's track & field and cross country season marks the 50th year of service to the University of Minnesota by legendary coach Roy Griak. Griak served as the head coach of the Minnesota men's cross country team from 1963-1996 and led the Gophers to three Big Ten titles. Griak has remained on staff as an administrative assistant since handing over the reigns of the program to current Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross CountrySteve Plasencia. Minnesota honors its long-time coach each Fall with the Roy Griak Invitational -- the 28th running of the Griak was ran on Sept. 28.
