THIS WEEKEND IN GOPHER TRACK & FIELD
Minnesota will host the annual Snowshoe Open this Friday at 4 p.m. CST. It will be the last home competition of the season for the Golden Gophers for both the indoor and outdoor season. The Gophers will also honor its senior class at the meet.
Last weekend the Gophers were represented in the state of Iowa, Washington and Wisconsin. The highlight of the weekend came from senior Hassan Mead who qualified for nationals in the 5,000m after clocking in at 13:33.42, at the Flo Track Husky Classic. Mead’s time is currently the fifth fastest in the country
Other notable performances came from Harun Abda and John Holton in the 600yd, the 4x400 relay team of Kevin Bradley, Holton, David Pachuta and Abda. Cameron Boy, Micah Hegerle, Jon Lehman and Trey Davis also had strong performances.
Abda (1:07.66) and Holton (1:09.99) went first and second in the 600yd before helping the 4x400 relay team take third with a their fastest time of the season at 3:09.00. Boy took second in the 200m (21.57), while Hegerle picked up a second place finish in the weight throw (67-8) and Lehman took fourth (64 ¼) for the Gophers. Davis took first in the shot put (57-5) at the Brooks Classic in River Falls, Wis.

Friday will also mark this year’s senior class final home contest. 11 seniors will be recognized for all their hard work, dedication and leadership that they have given the Minnesota track and field program. Ben Blankenship, Trey Davis, Paul Hilsen, Paul Hoplin, Joe McFarland, Hassan Mead, Quentin Mege, Alex Migit, Sean Olson, David Pachuta, Andy Richardson and Matt Volz make up this year’s class. Together they have been a part of a very special group that has seen head coach Steve Plasencia been named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the last five consecutive seasons (three indoor, two outdoor). This class has also been a key in the team’s back-to-back-to-back-to-back Big Ten Indoor championships.
The Big Ten Indoor championships are just around the corner. Next weekend Minnesota will defend its three-peat run, as they head to Lincoln, NE. New conference member Nebraska has been named the host of the 2012 Big Ten Indoor championships. Action gets underway next Friday at 10 a.m. with the Heptathlon.
THE GOLDEN GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Steve Plasencia enters his fourth season as the Golden Gophers head women's track & field coach. Plasencia was Plasencia was awarded his fifth consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year award, adding the 2011 indoor accolade to those from the 2009 and 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons. Plasencia heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Scott Berggren, Paul Thornton, Lynden Reder, Steve White and Roy Griak.
‘U’ Alum Siegmeier Joins Gophers Staff
A two-time All-American and three-time Big Ten champion, Zach Siegmeier will serve as director of operations for men's track & field and cross country.
Blankenship, Mead Shine in Olympic Finals
Mead and Blankenship recorded the best Olympic finishes by Gophers since Staffan Strand finished sixth in the high jump for Sweden during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
Blankenship Punches Ticket to Olympic Final
Ben Blankenship (1,500) and Hassan Mead (5,000) will run in Olympic finals on Saturday night.
