MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota men’s indoor track and field team will open the 2014 campaign ranked ninth in the nation, according to this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason rankings.
Minnesota is one of four Big Ten squads listed in the preseason ranking top-10 along with Wisconsin (fourth), Penn State (sixth) and Nebraska (eighth).
The Gophers return four All-Americans from last year’s squad in John Simons (mile), Jon Lehman (weight throw), Goaner Deng (4x400 relay) and Jacob Capek (4x400 relay) as Director of Men’s Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia enters his sixth year at the helm of the Gophers track and field program.
Minnesota kicks off the 2014 campaign with the Northwest Open this Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

Meanwhile, four unattached Gopher freshmen picked up titles at Concordia-St. Paul’s Holst Invitational on Saturday at SeaFoam Stadium in St. Paul.

The Gophers also added three top-10 all-time performances on Friday from Mitch Hechsel, Luke May and Obsa Ali.
Minnesota Heads West for Cardinal Classic
The Cardinal Classic is a two-day meet (Friday-Saturday) set at Cobb Track and Angell Field while the Holst Invitational is scheduled for Saturday at SeaFoam Stadium.
