SAN DIEGO (GopherSports.com) -- While the University of Minnesota runners were at the 105th Drake Relays, the Gophers throwers were amid heavy competition at the Triton Invitational on Saturday, hosted by UC-San Diego.
The Gophers were led in the shot put by Mark Jennings and Luke Johnson, both with top 10 finishes. Jennings cleared 17.21 meters (56-05.75 ft.) to finish fifth while Johnson came in seventh at 16.97 meters (55-08.25 ft.).
Minnesota also sent several unattached competitors to the SMU Cardinal Open on Saturday in Winona. The Gophers posted three of the top six finishes in the hammer throw including medalist Gian Ferretti (63.14 meters, 207-02 ft.). Mac Riedy finished third (50.56 meters, 165-10 ft.) while Colton Bender came in sixth (46.59 meters, 152-10 ft.). Bryan Bjerk also finished ninth in the shot put (12.76 meters, 41-10.50 ft.)
Wieland, Wiebke Earn Academic All-America
A three-time Academic All-American, Wieland represented the Maroon & Gold on the Second Team while Wiebke picked up his first career honor as a Third Team selection.
Mead Wins USATF 10,000 Meters
Mead’s title on Friday snapped Galen Rupp’s streak of eight consecutive USATF 10,000 meter championships.
Incoming Gophers Earn Track & Field Honors
Dawson LaRance was named the Montana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Hunter Lucas was named the North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
