SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota men’s outdoor track and field team scored 99 points in a winning effort at the 2013 Macalester/Bolstorff Twilight on Thursday night. The Gophers earned four individual titles for the program’s second-straight team title at the meet.

The Gophers put on a dominating performance in the throwing events on Thursday at Macalester with titles in the shot put, the weight throw and the discus.

Minnesota boasted the top five finishes in the discus throw on Thursday with Justin Barber taking top honors with a toss of 54.21 meters (177-10 ft.). Dominique Howard finished second at 51.90 meters (170-03 ft.) while Mark Jennings placed third at 51.53 meters (169-01 ft.). Micah Hegerle’s toss of 50.22 meters (164-09 ft.) came in fourth and Luke Johnson posted a fifth-place finish of 49.15 meters (161-03 ft.).

Minnesota finished 1-2-3 in the weight throw with Hegerle pacing the competition at 64.25 meters (210-09 ft.) followed by Jon Lehman in second at 59.84 meters (196-04 ft.) and Justin Barber in third at 57.86 meters (189-10 ft.)

The Gophers also picked up the top-three finishes in the shot put with Logan Hussung picking up the title at 16.65 meters (54-07.5 ft.), followed by Johnson in second at 16.60 meters (54-05.5 ft.) and Jacob Fenske in third at 15.24 meters (50-00 ft.).

Adam Isakson picked up the win in the pole vault with a height of 4.75 meters (15-07 ft.) while Kenny Schofield finished as the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.49 meters (21-03.50 ft.) in his season debut in the event.

Gophers Kick Off Drake Relays

The Minnesota men’s outdoor track and field team got underway at the 104th annual Drake Relays on Thursday with a handful of races before full competition kicks off on Friday.  

The Gophers’ 4x1600-meter relay team of Derek Storkel, Bob Nicolls, Blayne Dulian and Alex Brend posted a runner-up finish with a time of 16:45.51 after keeping pace with Notre Dame’s winning squad for the length of the relay. The Irish pulled ahead in the final 200 meters to clock a time of 16:42.89.

Minnesota’s Michael Bolland finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.32 after tangling up in the pack midrace and battling to the finish line. Adam Zutz came in 19th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:40.30.
