Pieter Gagnon finished second overall in his 10,000 meter run heat at the 53rd Mt. Sac Relays. Gagnon clocked in at 29:24.11 for the Golden Gophers.
Also competing on Thursday was Jack Szmanda in the decathlon. Szmanda finished third overall with 7,663 points, which ranks him third all-time. Szmanda's highlight of the day came with a first place finish in the pole vault. The junior cleared 17-4 1/2 (5.30m) to take first place and bump up to fifth on the all-time list. Szmanda finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 47-1 (14.35m) and fifth in the discus with a toss of 131-5 (40.07m). He would also finish third overall in the 1,500 meter run after clocking in at 4:25.35.
Competing in the "A" section of the decathlon were Logan Markuson and Kenny Schofield. Markuson finished 12th (6,583) and Schofield took 13th (6,448) for the Gophers. Markuson's best finish came in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:20.68. Schofield finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 40-10 1/2 (12.46m) and fourth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:39.17,
Minnesota returns the track on Friday with a full day of events starting at 1 p.m.

Through the first day of competition, the Gophers stand in seventh place with 14 points.

True freshmen Hamza Ali and Nick Rink will also represent the U.S. in international competition next month.

The two-day event begins on Friday, Feb. 24 and culminates on Saturday, Feb. 25.
