TEMPE, Ariz. (GopherSports.com) -- The Gophers opened up the 2014 outdoor season on Friday with two events at the 2014 Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium.
Jon Lehman finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 64.59 meters (211-11 ft.) while Viktor Steltor came in 15th with a toss of 51.72 meters (169-08 ft.).
The Gophers also had three competitors in the top 15 in the 1,500 meters on Friday with Bob Nicolls pacing the group in seventh at 3:49.39. Christian Skaret finished 11th at 3:52.06 while Cole O'Brien came in 12th at 3:52.91.
Minnesota returns to action at the 2014 Baldy Castillo Invitational tomorrow.
Blankenship, Mead Shine in Olympic Finals
Mead and Blankenship recorded the best Olympic finishes by Gophers since Staffan Strand finished sixth in the high jump for Sweden during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
Blankenship Punches Ticket to Olympic Final
Ben Blankenship (1,500) and Hassan Mead (5,000) will run in Olympic finals on Saturday night.
