Jonathan Webb, Derek Wiebke and Shane Streich highlighted the opening day of competition for the Maroon & Gold with Webb moving on in the 200 meters and Wiebke and Streich advancing in the 1,500 meters.
Ali finished with a time of 8:51.25 in his first 3,000 meter steeplechase competition of the year, leading the National Relays field with a performance that ranks second in the Big Ten and 20th in the nation this year.
The Gophers finished sixth out of 16 teams in the relay competitions as Minnesota competed in four of the seven relays, totaling 13 points.
Representing the Maroon & Gold at the top of the podium at Cobb Track & Angell Field were Jonathan Webb in the 400 meters, Eric Walker in the 110-meter hurdles and Ryan Lockard in the high jump.
The Gophers dominated the field events with five wins while adding two on the track.
A 2016 graduate of Hopkins High School • a five-time all-state honoree (twice in cross country, three times in track) and a four-time all-conference honoree (twice in cross country, twice in track) • served as captain of the cross country and track & field programs • 10-time letter winner at Hopkins (five in track, five in cross country) • high school teammates with fellow Gopher Hunter Staack • coached as a prep by Andrea Yesnes, Nick Lovas and Mike Harris • earned Academic Achievement honors all four years of high school and was Hopkins' 2016 Triple A Award winner.
