Behind Ali’s 10 points as 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, the Gophers recorded 25 points on Saturday to jump up to sixth in the team standings ahead of Sunday’s final day of competition.
Ali finished with a time of 8:51.25 in his first 3,000 meter steeplechase competition of the year, leading the National Relays field with a performance that ranks second in the Big Ten and 20th in the nation this year.
The Gophers finished sixth out of 16 teams in the relay competitions as Minnesota competed in four of the seven relays, totaling 13 points.
Representing the Maroon & Gold at the top of the podium at Cobb Track & Angell Field were Jonathan Webb in the 400 meters, Eric Walker in the 110-meter hurdles and Ryan Lockard in the high jump.
The Gophers dominated the field events with five wins while adding two on the track.
A 2016 graduate of Edina High School • earned all-state and all-conference honors in 2015 and 2016 • a three-time Lake Conference champion (twice in the 1,600 meters, one in the 800 meters) • competed for Jamie Kirkpatrick and Johnny Davis at Edina • closed out his prep career by leading Edina to a runner-up finish at the state meet including three top-four individual performances (second in the 3,200 meters, third in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 5,000 meters) • seven-time athletic letter winner (four in cross country, three in track) • a two-time academic all-state honoree • also earned one letter in community service • holds Edina school records in the 1,600 meters (4:13) and the 4x800 meter relay (7:52) • competed with the Edina Cross Country Club, earning all-region honors at Nike Cross Regionals and advancing to Nike Cross Nationals • competed with the Edina Track Club and ran at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
