The tournament’s No. 2 seed, junior Aleksey Zharinov, easily captured victories in both of his matches of the day. He defeated Michigan’s Chris Shaya 6-3, 6-3 and later went on to trounce Brenton Contini of Ohio State 6-0, 6-0. Zharinov will face Adam Schachterle of Northwestern on Sunday. Senior Thomas Haug, the No. 3 seed, defeated John Stone of Indiana 6-3, 6-1 and Kevin McLean of Ohio State 6-4, 6- 2 to put him up against Michael Rubin of Michigan on Sunday. Chris Wettengel also advanced by defeating Todd Stecko of Penn State in the second round 6-3, 6-2. He will face the tournament’s No. 6 seed, Adam Formancyzk, of Michigan State on Sunday. After battling with Iowa’s Stuart Waters, the Gophers’ Manuel Lievano advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory of Waters.
In other action, Eric Robertson defeated his first round opponent, Tres Jones of Iowa, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, but lost in the second round to Indiana’s Jakob Praibis. Steve Solberg also earned a victory in the first round, downing Johan Bergeras of Iowa 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5), but then lost to Andrew Wakefield of Purdue. Nate McLain lost in the first round to Cameron Marshfield of Michigan State 1-6, 4-6.
