Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn made sure the Minnesota men's tennis fall season finished with a bang on Sunday by winning the doubles title at the Metlife Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Tampa, Fla. The tournament, which began on Friday and ended on Sunday, marked the end of fall competition for the Gophers.
Dehn and Bonin defeated Andrew Butz and Michael Alford of Florida in a close, 9-8 (3), match to close out the Lakewood Classic after seniors Tobias Wernet and Sabastian Gallego were eliminated by the Gators' tandem earlier in the day.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the doubles tournament and taking down Miami's Eduardo Pavia and Waylon Chin 8-1 on Saturday, Bonin and Dehn recorded a narrow, 9-8 victory over Ricky Doverspike and Carlos Taborga of Alabama in the semifinals on Sunday.
Wernet and Gallego defeated Carl Sundberg and Omar Aly of Miami on 8-3 Friday and advanced past another Florida doubles tandem, Nassim Slilam and Billy Federhoffer, by default on Saturday, but fell just short of meeting Bonin and Dehn in the finals on Sunday, losing to Butz and Alford, 8-6.
Dehn also had success against Butz in singles play on Sunday, knocking the Florida freshman out in the consolation semifinals 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. Dehn conceded the consolation finals to Alford by default.
The Gophers pick up play and begin the dual-match competition on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Baseline Tennis Center against Marshall.
