Avery Ticer and Nic Edlefsen each went 2-0 today to advance to the semfinals of the 2004 Big Ten Singles Championship in Madison, Wis. Ticer is the second-highest seeded player remaining at No. 3, while Edlefsen is the lone unseeded competitor to reach the semifinals. In the second round consolation draw, No. 16 seed Andres Osorio went 2-0 to move into the semifinals.

In main draw play, Ticer downed No. 13 Ryan Recht of Indiana, 6-4, 6-4, before outlasting No. 6 Paul Rose of Purdue, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Ticer, Minnesota's lone senior and captain, takes on No. 12 Mark Barry of Penn State tomorrow in the semifinals.

Edlefsen moved to the semifinals with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 triumph over Drew Eberly of Ohio State and a 6-2, 7-5 upset win over Penn State's Malcolm Scatliffe, the tournament's No. 6 seed. Edlefsen, a sophomore transfer from UC Santa Barbara, will face No. 2 seed Joey Atas of Ohio State tomorrow in the semifinals.

Osorio moved to the semifinals of the second round consolation draw, defeating Sounak Chatterjee of Purdue, 6-4, 6-1, and Ohio State's Scott Green, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Osorio will take on Ruben Gonzalez of Illinois, a second-round loser to Edlefsen in the main draw, tomorrow in the consolation semifinals. Brian Lipinski and Mikey Kantar each lost their second round consolation draw matches.

The Golden Gophers went 0-2 in first round consolation action as Sion Wilkins and Chi Pham each lost straight-set matches.

Competition at the 2004 Big Ten Singles Championship continues through Monday, Nov. 15.

Last season, former Golden Gopher Chris Wettengel captured the 2003 Big Ten Singles Championship, going 5-0 with wins over the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds. Lipinski, meanwhile, won the consolation title.

Following the 2004 Big Ten Singles Championship, Minnesota opens dual match play on Jan. 29 at Virginia.
