University of Minnesota men's tennis player Andres Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) went 2-0 today to advance to the round of 16 of the 2006 Big Ten Singles Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich. Osorio, a senior, is the Golden Gophers' lone remaining competitor in the fall season-ending tournament.

As a team, the Maroon and Gold went a combined 6-6 in championship bracket play today. Winning first-round matches were Osorio, Nic Edlefsen, Brian Lipinski, Sion Wilkins and Mikey Kantar. Falling in the first round was Raoul Schwark and Chi Pham. All but one of Minnesota's round of 64 wins were in straight sets.

Osorio, seeded 11th, downed Iowa's J.P. Ritchie, 6-2, 6-3, before defeating George Navas of Michigam 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the second round. Osorio will now face No. 5 seed Christian Tempke of Northwestern in the second round.

The third round and quarterfinals will be played on Sunday (Nov. 12, 10 a.m.), and the tournament will wrap up with the semifinals and championship match on Monday (Nov. 13, 9 a.m.). There will be a consolation bracket for first-round losers.

Last season, Edlefsen went 6-1 at the Big Ten Singles Championship in East Lansing, Mich., to capture the consolation title. In 2004, Edlefsen and Avery Ticer advanced to the semifinals of the fall season-ending tournament. Minnesota's last Big Ten Singles Champion was Chris Wettengel in 2003.
