Four members of the men's tennis team are competing in the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic. The event, held in Tampa, Fla., began today and ends on Sunday.
The Gophers competing in both singles and doubles are seniors Sebastian Gallego and Tobias Wernet, junior Julian Dehn and sophomore Rok Bonin.
Bonin, who won the Denver Pioneer Invitational earlier this fall, won both of his single matches on Friday. He defeated Nassim Slilam of Florida in three sets in the first round. Bonin lost the first set to Slilam, but won the second and was up 2-0 when his opponent retired. Bonin was efficient in his second-round victory, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Christian Blocker of Miami.
Gallego and Wernet each received a first-round bye in singles. Wernet rallied to win his second-round match 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Florida's Billy Federhoffer. Gallego was on the opposite end of a three-set match, falling to Miami's Waylon Chin 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
Dehn was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Miami's Gabriel Flores in the first round.
In doubles, the pairing of Bonin and Dehn received a first-round bye. Gallego and Wernet won their first-round match 8-3 against Carl Sunberg and Omar Aly from Miami.
