oThe University of Minnesota's top doubles team of Avery Ticer and Adrien Debreyne advanced to the semifinals today of the 2004 Milwaukee Tennis Classic Collegiate Tournament. The Golden Gophers fell out of contention in singles competition with two losses in quarterfinal action.
Ticer and Debreyne, the tournament's third-seeded doubles duo, downed Nebraska's No. 5 Joerg Barthel and Jose Rivera in the quarterfinals to advance to the next round to face Troy Delmege and Pete Van Lieshout of Marquette. Ticer and Debreyne are 5-1 as a team this season.
Minnesota's other remaining doubles duo of Nic Edlefsen and Chi Pham lost their quarterfinal match to No. 5 Daniel Davies and Clint Letcher of Arizona State, 8-5.
In singles action, top-seeded Ticer was upset in the quarterfinals, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Dan Hanegby of Binghamton. Edlefsen also fell, losing 6-4, 6-3 to No. 9 Chris Biro of Arizona State.
