sThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team posted a solid showing in the opening day of competiton today at the 2004 Milwaukee Tennis Classic Collegiate Tournament. The Golden Gophers went 8-3 in singles matches and advanced three players to the round of 16. UM's doubles teams went 3-0 to move on to the round of 16.
In singles action, top-seeded Avery Ticer received a bye in the first round before defeating Brad Rhodes of Ball State, 6-2, 7-5, for his first win of the season. No. 9 seed Nic Edlefsen also moved on to the round of 16 after two straight-set victories on the day. Edlefsen will take on No. 3 seed Jonathan Kinsella of Arizona State tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Rounding out Minnesota's round of 16 qualifiers was No. 9 seed Adrien Debreyne. The freshman defeated Gabe Inchauste of DePaul, 6-3, 6-2, before outlasting Jan Polhamus of Ball State, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Minnesota's Chi Pham, Mikey Kantar and Sion Wilkins each won their respective first-round singles matches, but lost in the round of 32.
In doubles action, Minnesota defeated three teams from Western Michigan to advance to the round of 16. Ticer and Debreyne, the No. 3 seed, downed R.K. Bacalla and Tommy Dennis, 8-4. Kantar and Wilkins gained an 8-3 win and will face No. 5 Alex Friesen and Willy-Gali Solanas of Northern Illinois in the next round. Edlefsen and Pham also advanced and will take on No. 4 Gerhard Posch and Adrian Szatmary of Nebraska tomorrow afternoon.
